Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are friendly and intelligent. They are best with well-rounded families. They can get bored easily and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't interacting with them enough. If they aren't socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and even bite. It is crucial to have clear boundaries set so the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They require 2 to 3 hours each day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. Apart from being a great pet, they also make wonderful pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature they are loud and can be a nuisance to those living close by. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who may be frightened by their noise.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. For this reason, DNA testing is the only method of determining sex. Once the bird's sex is established, breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This is a long process and the pet's owner must be patient and understand that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and aid in resolving any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative and plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the actual ocean, not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Buymacaw Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who are close to their families until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

System II builds upon the repertoire introduced in System 1 through exercises using equipment. This module is accompanied by an instructional manual and DVD of Lolita teaching the system for personal practice.

Lolita's Diet
A healthy diet is important for the health of a gold and blue macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been criticised for the quality of the food they provide to killer whales. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many claim is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is evident Lolita's health continues decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see that she is returned to the wild. Lolita is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for a long time. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that left her in a fragile state.
The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita's condition. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging quickly and her health is deteriorating.
Since her captor does not have to divulge this information, it's unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an integral factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever to a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to moving the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she could swim deep in the ocean and perhaps even meet the orca thought to be her mother. Sadly the plans came too late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
